WHY DID YOU GET INTO FITNESS (AND CROSSFIT)? When I was in my undergrad program, I learned exercise made me feel happy and healthy. It became my stress relief. A friend introduced me to Crossfit in 2013 and I fell in love with being constantly challenged by its varied programming.

WHAT YEAR DID YOU START CROSSFITTING? I began CrossFit in 2011

WHY DID YOU GET INTO FITNESS (AND CROSSFIT)? I’ve always been committed to leading a healthy and active lifestyle- following college soccer I needed something to continue that major part of life. I moved into long distance running and spent years running half and full marathons. I was introduced to CrossFit by a colleague and spent 2 years following the main site. Once I moved closer to an actual CrossFit gym I was immediately hooked and found a great outlet for my energy and competitive nature.

WHY DID YOU BECOME A TRAINER? I have always been drawn to teaching and I find my role as a trainer/coach another outlet to teach.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE CROSSFIT MOVEMENT? Muscle ups 🙂

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CHEAT FOOD? Cupcakes

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SUPERHERO AND WHY? Catwoman- not fully good and not fully bad

CERTIFICATIONS/ EDUCATION:

Doctorate of Athletic Training- University of Idaho
Master of Science in Exercise Science- Syracuse University
Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training- Slippery Rock University
CrossFit L1/L2
National Academy of Sports Medicine- Performance Enhancement Specialist, Corrective Exercise Specialist

WHAT YEAR DID YOU START CROSSFITTING? I started CrossFit in 2013

WHY DID YOU GET INTO FITNESS (AND CROSSFIT)?  I have been active my entire life. I was a competitive gymnast for 12 years and a collegiate pole vaulter for Ohio University’s track and field team. When I graduated college, I knew I would need something that would push me the way sports always did. Once I graduated, I tried out a CrossFit class and was hooked! I loved that CrossFit tricked me into doing cardio and included gymnastics and lifting movements that I had experience with. I also knew transitioning out of sports would be hard because I have always worked out with other people and never had motivation to workout by myself. The CrossFit community is what motivated me to come back day after day, even after feeling so sore and tired from the tough workouts.

WHY DID YOU BECOME A TRAINER? I have worked in fitness since college and have always loved to surround myself with other health fanatics. I became a trainer because I love helping people work to achieve their goals. The energy in the gym when someone masters a new skill or hits a new PR is so contagious and I love being apart of that.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE CROSSFIT MOVEMENT? Snatches and handstand push ups

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CHEAT FOOD? I love anything with cheese on it, especially Mexican food!

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SUPERHERO AND WHY? Peter Quill (Guardians of the Galaxy) because he doesn’t take himself too seriously and has good taste in music!

CERTIFICATIONS/ EDUCATION:

  • CrossFit Level 1 Trainer
  • B.S. Journalism
  • Nutrition Educator for the University of the District of Columbia

WHAT YEAR DID YOU START CROSSFITTING?  2014, right after graduating college.

WHY DID YOU GET INTO FITNESS (AND CROSSFIT)? I moved into my grand-big brother’s family house after graduating to start running a camp in Allentown, Pa… and was already going to planet fitness for a couple months before (and got kicked out). Stan dragged me to his Crossfit, SYR and the first workout was Fran. Imagine your first workout being FRAN at 285lbs. I was hooked from there.

I started getting into fitness in 2013 after weighing in at 336lbs. That was NOT OKAY, Especially in a fraternity. So I started leaning down to 200 on a 3.5 year journey.

WHY DID YOU BECOME A TRAINER?  I wanted to coach kids, and my former head coach thought coaching adults would be a good learning experience pre-Crossfit kids. I agree, because I fell in love with coaching, and it comes naturally as a teacher by day, anyway. I really just want to help others be better, each and everyday

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE CROSSFIT MOVEMENT?  Power clean and back squats. (1rm preferably because….PRs)

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CHEAT FOOD? Chocolate chip cookies, pizza, and Philadelphia cheesesteaks (only philly made).

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SUPERHERO AND WHY?  Star-Lord (guardians of the galaxy). Suave, smooth with the words (and ladies), badass marksman who saves the world and cares more about his team than himself. A lot of parallels with myself (except for the suave/smooth/marksmanship.

Why did you get into fitness (and CrossFit)?

I grew up as an athlete but during my high school days had 2 major knee reconstructive surgeries. During recovery I was told I would never be able to run/squat ever again. After such a blow I fell into a depression for a few years until finally I had enough. Gave CrossFit a try and instantly became hooked. I ended up changing my entire career goals and dove head first into the fitness world.

Why did you become a trainer?

I started off personal training in “globo” gyms but it just didn’t feel right. I was doing CrossFit to stay fit so why would I not combine the two worlds and follow my passion.

What’s your favorite CrossFit movement?

Snatch

What is your favorite cheat food?

This is tough. If I have to pick probably Pizza and ice cream.

What’s your favorite Superhero and why?

WHY DID YOU GET INTO FITNESS (AND CROSSFIT)?

I was always a super active kid – playing outside, riding my bike and climbing trees. My parents got me into dance and gymnastics around preschool. Then, I started played sports in elementary school. Since then, I’ve always been on the search for a new trail to hike, 1/2 marathon to run, or a yoga class to crash. But, I was actually super intimidated by CrossFit upon first introduction. I thought it looked REALLY hard! But after that first class, I realized that although I had to modify a thing or two, I had survived! And, I haven’t looked back since! I love a good challenge. That’s why seven years later, I’m still doing CrossFit. To me, the best part is that no matter how long you’ve been doing CrossFit (days, months or years) you’re guaranteed to be out of breath at the end of the WOD, and sore the next day.

WHY DID YOU BECOME A TRAINER?

I absolutely love the “family” a CrossFit gym invites. It is like being back on a team when I was playing sports. Being a trainer provides the perfect opportunity to be an active part of that CrossFit family. Also, I love working with people who want to push themselves. I love to see the look on someone’s face when they conquer their first pull-up, or clear their first set of 10 double-unders. Being a part of that moment is invaluable.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE CROSSFIT MOVEMENT?

Double-unders and Power Cleans, in that order.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CHEAT FOOD?

Pumpkin Spice *anything*

(Did you know they make Pumpkin Spice Kale Chips?! Not that kale chips would really be a cheat food… but you get my point.)

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SUPERHERO AND WHY?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and if I had to pick one of them – Michelangelo.

I grew up watching the cartoons, and was SO EXCITED when the original movie came out. I love Michelangelo’s personality. He knows how to have a good time, but still gets the crime-fighting job done.

WHY DID YOU GET INTO FITNESS (AND CROSSFIT)?
I’ve always played sports growing up so fitness was always a part of me. As far as CrossFit, I was drawn in after seeing Nasty Girls on YouTube. I didn’t know about bumper plates back then so I thought they were super strong whipping around 135lbs for multiple reps.

WHY DID YOU BECOME A TRAINER? I love to teach, coach, and mentor. My goal is to make a positive change in people’s lives, one rep at a time.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE CROSSFIT MOVEMENT? The bar muscle up

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CHEAT FOOD? Bon Chon chicken

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SUPERHERO AND WHY? My favorite superhero would be Goku from the Dragonball series. He trains really hard, goes above and beyond to help his friends and family, and he knows how to throwdown on food.

His specialties include Strongman and lifting heavy stuff. His goals for the future are to fight getting older one rep at a time and to qualify for the CrossFit games as a Masters Athlete.

Why did you get into fitness (and CrossFit)? I have always been involved in competitive sports, playing Rugby through college and beyond. After a deployment to Iraq my fitness and mental health were not a priority and it showed. CrossFit and CF competitions were a form of therapy for me, and a tool to to lead a fuller happier life.

Why did you become a trainer? I love that CrossFit understands the value of community and shared struggle. Helping people reach their fitness and ultimately health and wellness goals through community is something I am very grateful to be a part of.

What’s your favorite CrossFit movement? Anything heavy; cleans, deadlifts, stones!

What is your favorite cheat food? SUGAR!! Maine and my Nana are known for whoopie pies so those and any cake doughnut pastry related items.

What’s your favorite Superhero and why? He’s stupid popular right now but prior to the X-Men movies it was Wolverine. I have always been a fan of the anti-hero. Why did you get into fitness (and CrossFit)?

Having been an athlete in some form, from the time I started school all the way through playing college lacrosse and rugby, I wanted to ensure I was in the best shape possible going into the Marine Corps Marathon in 2007. I needed a new routine that would ensure that I would be healthy come race day, as well as the days/weeks leading up to it. I happened to stumble across the world of CrossFit in January of that year, and I haven’t looked back since. CrossFit allows me the freedom to not only physically challenge myself in ways I’ve never thought before, but mentally as well. I may be older now than when I started, but I’ve never been in better shape, nor more mentally tough.

Why did you become a trainer?

As ridiculous as it may sound, I was born to educate. Being a high school teacher by trade, it was only natural to take those skills into the gym atmosphere, and help guide people there. We all started at square one, with a PVC pipe and bands on the bar, so to be able to relate to that feeling and to break the moves and transitions down for members so that they begin to see success, is an amazing feeling.

What’s your favorite CrossFit movement?

Power Clean…followed closely by double-unders.

What is your favorite cheat food?

The person who first created the combination of chocolate and peanut butter, deserves a pat on the back from me…along with a 50 burpee penalty b/c it always sets me back in my macros!

What’s your favorite Superhero and why?

Wonder Woman. Not only is she tall, due to her Amazonian heritage, but she’s beautiful, strong and kicks ass all at the same time.

Why did you get into fitness (and CrossFit)?

I got my start in CrossFit back in May 2008 at Outlaw CrossFit (formerly known as CrossFit Alexandria). I then went on to become a full time personal trainer in Washington Sports Clubs, and continued teaching CrossFit classes- this included heading some classes at Andrews Air Force Base for a couple years, 6-1/2years at Outlaw, and finally ending up at the awesome CrossFit Woodbridge. I love to see clients accomplish goals that they would not have otherwise reached on their own for whatever reason.

Why did you become a trainer?
