WHY DID YOU GET INTO FITNESS (AND CROSSFIT)?

I grew up as an athlete but during my high school days had 2 major knee reconstructive surgeries. During recovery I was told I would never be able to run/squat ever again. After such a blow I fell into a depression for a few years until finally I had enough. Gave CrossFit a try and instantly became hooked. I ended up changing my entire career goals and dove head first into the fitness world.

WHY DID YOU BECOME A TRAINER?

I started off personal training in “globo” gyms but it just didn’t feel right. I was doing CrossFit to stay fit so why would I not combine the two worlds and follow my passion.

Always have been into sports since birth I think. CrossFit, sports, fitness and nutrition teaches me so much about the mind, body and soul and is literally an adventure for me.

Working out and being with people who want to learn this stuff is why I do this.

WHY DID YOU GET INTO FITNESS (AND CROSSFIT)?

I got bored with all of the bro-science type workouts I would get online and do in a normal gym.  When I started training hoping to go out for Rescue Swimming I started looking for new ways to train.  Crossfit stuck around as the more well-rounded training style for what I wanted to do.

WHY DID YOU BECOME A TRAINER?

Fame.  Glory.  To be able to argue with my wife about movements and have a certification behind it.  But mostly because the gym is my stress relief, I love going there and always liked when people asked for movement tips.  Now I can get paid to do what I already enjoyed doing.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE CROSSFIT MOVEMENT?

Bench press?  I don’t think that counts, so even though I suck and my numbers aren’t where I want them to be, I do enjoy the rare occasion when my snatch actually feels like I know what I’m doing.

WHY DID YOU GET INTO FITNESS (AND CROSSFIT)?

Having been an athlete in some form, from the time I started school all the way through playing college lacrosse and rugby, I wanted to ensure I was in the best shape possible going into the Marine Corps Marathon in 2007. I needed a new routine that would ensure that I would be healthy come race day, as well as the days/weeks leading up to it. I happened to stumble across the world of CrossFit in January of that year, and I haven’t looked back since. CrossFit allows me the freedom to not only physically challenge myself in ways I’ve never thought before, but mentally as well. I may be older now than when I started, but I’ve never been in better shape, nor more mentally tough.

WHY DID YOU BECOME A TRAINER?

As ridiculous as it may sound, I was born to educate. Being a high school teacher by trade, it was only natural to take those skills into the gym atmosphere, and help guide people there. We all started at square one, with a PVC pipe and bands on the bar, so to be able to relate to that feeling and to break the moves and transitions down for members so that they begin to see success, is an amazing feeling.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE CROSSFIT MOVEMENT?

Power Clean…followed closely by double-unders.

WHAT YEAR DID YOU START CROSSFITTING?

I started CrossFit in 2013

WHY DID YOU GET INTO FITNESS (AND CROSSFIT)?

I have been active my entire life. I was a competitive gymnast for 12 years and a collegiate pole vaulter for Ohio University’s track and field team. When I graduated college, I knew I would need something that would push me the way sports always did. Once I graduated, I tried out a CrossFit class and was hooked! I loved that CrossFit tricked me into doing cardio and included gymnastics and lifting movements that I had experience with. I also knew transitioning out of sports would be hard because I have always worked out with other people and never had motivation to workout by myself. The CrossFit community is what motivated me to come back day after day, even after feeling so sore and tired from the tough workouts.

WHY DID YOU BECOME A TRAINER?

I have worked in fitness since college and have always loved to surround myself with other health fanatics. I became a trainer because I love helping people work to achieve their goals. The energy in the gym when someone masters a new skill or hits a new PR is so contagious and I love being apart of that.

WHY DID YOU GET INTO FITNESS (AND CROSSFIT)?

I was looking for an outlet to become more healthy without doing the typical gym thing. I always found a regular gym setting was boring and overwhelming. I was an athlete throughout high school and wanted a competitive and supportive place to still get that atmosphere. The community I found with CrossFit and people I’ve got to know brought a entirely other beneficial outlet as well.

WHY DID YOU BECOME A TRAINER?

I love teaching people and watching them succeed and I love passing on knowledge I learn and help someone any way I can.

WHAT YEAR DID YOU START CROSSFITTING?

I was introduced to CrossFit in 2010 by my twin sister Melissa. We were both stationed in Okinawa, Japan and she wanted me to try out this fairly new sport called CrossFit. My first workout was a short 7-minute AMRAP that consisted of 10 burpees, and I believe 15 air squats.  Anyway, I thought it was awful yet surprisingly satisfying. After that, I fell in love with CrossFit and have always done or incorporated a form of it into my workouts.

WHY DID YOU GET INTO FITNESS (AND CROSSFIT)?

My dad was a competitive body builder and I remember how dedicated he was to the sport and how passionate he was about fitness which ultimately, drew me in at a young age. From as early as P.E in elementary school being my favorite class to learning how to lift weights in my weight training class in high school. I did cheerleading, cross country and wrestled in high school, but weightlifting was my true passion and that eventually lead me to CrossFit.

WHY DID YOU BECOME A TRAINER?

After I joined the Marine Corps, I began to lead a lot of PT classes and would lead classes for anyone struggling with their weight. I found myself staying up late creating workouts for the next day and I noticed how passionate I was about it. I truly enjoy helping people reach their goals and it made happy to see them happy. After I got out, I knew I wanted a career in fitness, so I majored in Kinesiology at George Mason University.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE CROSSFIT MOVEMENT?

Clean and jerk 1000000 percent!

WHY DID YOU GET INTO FITNESS (AND CROSSFIT)?

I started my fitness journey running and following random lifting programs. I quickly learned that following random programs was going to lead to random results so I started looking for a program that would help improve my running. I tried a few different group fitness classes and fell in love with CrossFit. Not only did my running improve, but my overall outlook on fitness changed. My goals changed from being skinny to being strong!

WHY DID YOU BECOME A TRAINER?

The more I grow as an athlete, the more I think I have to offer other athletes who are looking to become a better version of themselves. There is a place for everyone in a CrossFit gym, whether you’re competitive or just starting out, and I want to help everyone find their place.

WHY DID YOU GET INTO FITNESS (AND CROSSFIT)?

I got my start in CrossFit back in May 2008 at Outlaw CrossFit (formerly known as CrossFit Alexandria). It started as an internship that was a requirement to fulfill my Exercise Science degree at Virginia Commonwealth University. I then went on to become a full time personal trainer in Washington Sports Clubs, and continued teaching CrossFit classes- this included heading some classes at Andrews Air Force Base for a couple years, 6-1/2years at Outlaw, and finally ending up at the awesome CrossFit Woodbridge. I love to see clients accomplish goals that they would not have otherwise reached on their own for whatever reason.

WHY DID YOU BECOME A TRAINER?

I have always had an interest in health and helping people…This lead me to pursuing my exercise science degree, which then easily led me into the world of fitness.
