Reminder

Just a few reminders here folks.  CFW will be competing for all the marbles At CrossFit Impavidus on Saturday for the Capital Affiliate League finals.  Also, the WLC kicks on SUNDAY at 9:30am.  We will start with measurements and then go right in to the WOD.  The WOD for the WLC is an AMRAP in 9 of 7 KB swings, 7 burpees and run 50m.

Who believes in participation awards?  Should a trophy be given to everyone or should there be a winner and a …oh man, should I say it??? A loser every time?  I think this could stir some good conversation in the comments section tonight so I want to hear what your thoughts are…

  1. How about a medal that says “Sorry, you’re a loser”?

  2. Only one winner, this whole everyone gets an award movement is horrible. Life doesnt work like that :-)

  3. Doesn’t that defeat that purpose of competing? There is no way of showing your accomplishment and what you were able to do. This is what is being taught to kids in school these days and I feel like it is teaching them to settle for being last because either way they will get the same award that the best child got. It tells us to settle for weakness and that defeat is okay.

  4. I think you could have a few winners (1st, 2nd, 3rd), but everyone shouldn’t win because everyone didn’t win. Winning is what we work for…not something that’s given to us. That’s life.

Ha!! I don’t know Dan–I’ll tell you after Saturday whether I think there should be one winner or whether we should share all the prize money! ;)

  6. How about this? 1st place gets a Prestige Chiropractic 12 visit chiropractic package, 2nd gets 6 visit package, and 3rd gets a 3 visit package?

  7. I think everyone’s ultimate prize should be their own personal satisfaction at having taken part and hopefully having discovered some things about themselves and their lives for the better. If there is a tangible prize for the “winner” (which is measured by how many inches are lost plus points plus how much the WOD improves?) then, fine, that’s nice and it adds an element of fun. I would only consider myself a loser if I didn’t do my best or if I quit.

  8. Top three winners, and perhaps “honorable mentions” for people who participated hard and made serious improvements. This challenge is a little different in that it’s not all about “faster, stronger, tougher” but also about lifestyle improvement, changes to one’s body, etc. I think it is bigger than just winning and losing. Even so, I don’t think that everyone should win. If you want that then sign up for tee ball.

  9. I don’t think there should be an “award” for participation, but recognition for participating is nice – which is why t-shirts for running in 5Ks are cool to get. But a trophy? I think trophies should go to winners… or why else would you compete?

  10. I think the winners should be split between male and female because female genetically have a harder time burning fat compared to men. Read this article: http://www.livestrong.com/article/397668-male-vs-female-weight-loss/. For example, the last challenge’s top three were all males.

  11. In the end there can be only one. Everyone else gets a tee shirt.

  12. Heck no there shouldn’t be an award for everyone! Top female and top male, perhaps 2nd and 3rd for each gender too. I do like the chiro package suggestion and def think we should do CFW WLC t-shirts for the participants. :) I saw someone else’s commentary about “everyone gets a trophy” and agree that shouldn’t be propagated. I also agree with the statement about awarding everyone something defeats the competition aspect; I’m not a huge competitor, I’m def more focused on my improvement and not in beating someone else. But, I think it adds an element of motivation if there’s a reward for best overall.

  13. Are we in elementary school where we are required to give awards out to every student so no one has hurt feelings?! Didn’t think so. I think it would totally kill the competition aspect. Top male and female should get something, but a t-shirt for participants wouldn’t hurt. Personally, I’m looking to better myself and if I can achieve that at the end of 8 weeks then I will be satisfied.

  14. Not everyone should be considered a winner. I agree with the first, second, and third places for trophies. I, personally, consider myself a winner each time I walk out of Crossfit Woodbridge with a sense of accomplishment at what I just achieved. I have come so far in the 6 months I’ve been a part of crossfit and more recently, down 10 pounds since January 1st thanks to Paleo! I am going to put my all into the Whole Life Challenge and see how much further I can better MY life. I may or may not walk away with a trophy, but I will walk away knowing I am wholistically better than when I began :)

  15. I’ll take the Loser trophy…for now… But just you wait and see., as soon as I get past this damn sickness I will be working harder than ever, not to mention participating in the WLC.

Seeing all you post about this whole “everyone’s a winner” BS is great to see. I hope if you have kids in school or sports you share with the administration and leaders those beliefs. Its terrible what we are doing as a society teaching kids this. How are they going to deal with failure as adults when they’ve no idea…?

  16. This is for life/ team sports in general….Awards for the top three finishers. I think at a very young age 4-6 year olds it is a nice thing for them to get trophies to encourage them to come back to the sport and not keep track of winning or losing. However after that age it defeats the purpose and the kids become accustom to getting a trophy and being a “winner”.

I think that is part of the problem with society today, kids are not shown that you will fail at things while they are growing up and mom and dad gets them trophies and prizes all the time so they are never taught how to deal with failing. When they go out to the real world and they start failing and their boss fires them and they don’t get a trophy they have no idea how to handle it!

  17. Please we are adults…A simple first place trophy is all that’s needed.

Consolation prizes are bogus. I think top winner; male and female OR top three winners; not gender specific. That’s it. Participation for the event T-shirts are nice.
