Scaling for success while challenging yourself everyday

How much weight should I use?

Should this be a super heavy workout or fast and furious?

Do you think this is too much band for my pull up?

These are all the types of questions that you should be asking your coach prior to the WOD starting.  We have to get better as a gym at choosing our weights and challenging ourselves throughout a workout.  If you are frantically changing weights in the middle of a workout because you think you cannot go any further then you have failed at some stage prior to starting your WOD.  Read the WOD and ask questions so that you understand what you are doing and therefore can pick a weight that will be safe, challenging and effective at meeting your goals of being at CFW.  Or, if you are completely lost, ASK, that is what we are here for!

Good talk, see you soon!

TODAY:

Tabata: (20 secs of work followed by 10 sec of rest, 8 sets each movement)

Front Squats (45/35)

Press (45/35)

  1. DUs are the bane of my existence. Tabata DUs…..sigh.

  2. Ugh the first Tuesday I can’t make and this is a WOD I could feel confident doing! I’ll do it home though.

Yeah, I definitely didn’t use enough weight today. Thing is, I thought I had it set up solid. I even tested my clean and jerk the night before to get the right balance of tough and doable (I thought). I even PR’d the jerk. But once I was done, I knew I finished too fast and in hindsight would’ve put a touch more weight on the bar. Sometimes we think we’re doing it right and mess it up. That, or Dan’s strength series is working too well. ;) I made up for it by doing pull-up training after the WOD. (Thanks, Wendy).

Scaling has definitely been hard for me as a newbie. Having never done weight training, and coming in with hardly any arm strength, I sometimes wonder if I SHOULDN’T scale down a movement in order to progress? Then I wonder, if I don’t scale down, and the movement is crappy, am I getting the full potential of the movement at all? It’s always intimidating to me, but I’m thankful for good coaching…Nick and Lloyd have been great. Dan…you’re okay, too. :)

Over the months I’ve gotten better about scaling, but I’m still working on minimizing rests or stopping during the WODs and decreasing my time to complete the WOD. It’s hit or miss right now; Rome wasn’t built in a day. Aimee Robeson you have to share your secret with me on how you just seem to zip through the WODs. You’re my inspiration.

And, yes Elysia, the Conjugate Strength Series IS working!
