This week we will go back to school and learn why it is we CrossFit, get results and how we can move better. Today we start with attempting to answer the question of why we use barbells to train and not a crazy circuit of fancy looking machines surrounded by mirrors and flat screen TV’s. Any ideas?
Thats right brainiacs, because our bodies function as a complete system. It works as a system and thus likes to to be trained as such. Our strength training must be executed in the same fashion that we will use the strength we gain in our daily lives. Barbells, and the exercises we us them for, are far superior to other training tools because they allow for and require each movement to be controlled fully by the body. When our nervous system commands them and muscles work together to move the joints between bones and apply force to a load (the bar) your body preforms at its optimum level. Optimal level performance in the gym + proper nutrition = a well oiled machine ready for anything life throws at you!
On the other hand if you like what you see in the photo above, I will explain it as well. This is a machine forcing your body to move a certain way based on an elaborate pulley system with no requirement to use the nervous system, your individual biomechanics or train muscles together as they function normally. The neuromuscular relationship has been ignored along with your bodies systematic approach to movement which as you and I both know does not equal optimal performance.
I have only hit own a few benefits but I hope this helps us understand why we do what we do a little better. Never stop learning!
